Astrology Transits January 2018 –
New Paths, New Energy

I am feeling a surge of optimism as this first month of the new year begins. The first ten days of January have some really active, hopeful energy that foreshadows the coming 364 days.

This quote by Neil Gaiman beautifully describes the energy of the new year.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

The New Year opens with a full Moon in Cancer in opposition to Venus and the Sun in Capricorn. The full Moon is a call to action to let go of other’s expectations and tradition-bound “shoulds” that are no longer working. This is especially true with regard to family matters.

The planetary troops rally around this idea on the 2nd of January when Uranus goes stationary direct in Aries. Uranus going direct means that the chains are loosened and it is time to express your unique, scarred, beautiful self in all of its glory.

Expressing this energy won’t be without its challenges. Saturn has just entered its home sign, Capricorn, where it is strong. Because it is strong, it will exert extra influence in your life over the next two and one-half years. Saturn in Capricorn wants to cling to the status quo. It advises caution and reminds us that rules were put in place for a reason. It can often mean that you will need to work harder for what you accomplish. The “quick fix” will no longer work.

The good news about Saturn is that he does reward in due time so long as you put in the effort and diligence to accomplish your goals. Those of you who have been going through a harsh Saturn period (Saturn conjunct, square, or in opposition to your natal planets) may very well be seeing surprising rewards in the area of your chart where Saturn is transiting. Always remember that Saturn rewards in due time according to his timetable, not yours. Please, hang in there through any rough times so you can collect your reward.

Venus’ conjunct the Sun and then Pluto in Capricorn on January 6-8 begins a time of questioning personal values, particularly around your career and/or public standing. Potentially interesting news from the government could surface as both Venus and Mercury conjunct with Pluto during the month of January.

Re-evaluate your plans and ideas when Mercury is conjunct Saturn on the 12th. The best success will be obtained when your plans are both innovative (Uranus) and practical (Saturn).

On January 6-8 Mars is conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio and Uranus is trine Mercury. Anger (yours and other’s) could be a problem during this time. Keep your emotions in check and use this charged-up energy to move your plans and ideas forward. There are no retrograde planets during this time period and the impetus to move forward is sizzling.

Uranus’ message conflicts with Saturn’s message so there will be some tension and conflict between the two. However, rather than let yourself be torn between the two courses of action, I strongly advise you to go for what you want and to use Saturn as the “voice of reason” to keep you from getting in over your head.

The New Moon conjunct the Sun and Venus in Capricorn on the 16th is a time when you will be tested regarding your values. This could show up as a conflict between career wishes and home wishes. Or, it might manifest as a desire to change careers or work methods altogether.

It is important to realize that, as the Sun, Mercury and Venus go over Pluto at 19 degrees Capricorn this month, the choices you make now could have long-ranging consequences. Choose wisely and be careful not to burn any bridges until you are absolutely sure it is the right thing to do.

Finally on January 31 we have the first eclipse of the year, a total super moon, total lunar eclipse at 11 degrees Leo/Aquarius. In keeping with this year’s theme, this eclipse is about individuality versus going along with consensus and the herd. I will have more to say about his eclipse later.

The next eclipse is a partial solar eclipse in Aquarius on February 15, 2018. In all, we have a total of five eclipses this year. It is certainly a year for shaking things up. Learn to go with the flow and stay grounded and you may find yourself in a very good spot by January 2019.

Find out how the January 31 and February 15 eclipses will affect you by taking advantage of my eclipse reading special. Only $60 for each one-half hour reading or $290 for a package covering all 5 eclipses. You must book your eclipse reading by January 15, 2018 in order to be eligible for the discount. Let me know if you have any questions on anything I talked about in this newsletter or anything else. There is so much going on in the sky that it is impossible to talk about everything that is important in a short newsletter.
