Astrology Transits September 2018 – New Hope and Action

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches on the soul and sings the tune

Without the words and never stops at all. – Emily Dickinson

August is gone, school has started, and we now begin to shift into fall mode, I have been reflecting a bit about the hot, challenging summer that we have gone through.  So many of my clients have expressed a sense of fatigue, burn-out, anger, frustration or even depression.  I too have had a challenging summer.

With five to six planets retrograde during most of the summer, it has sometimes felt as though we were slogging through mud — one step forward and two steps back.  However, Mercury and Mars are both now moving direct and Saturn will turn direct on September 6.  Pluto, Neptune and Uranus remain retrograde.  Pluto will turn direct on October 1, then Venus turns retrograde on October 4.

Mars in direct motion will get everything moving again, though vestiges of anger will remain, because Mars is still out of bounds by declination until September 23.

September brings a definite shift that allows a bit of optimism, hope and energy to resurface.  It is time to stand up on our wobbly legs and enter the good fight once again.

With a strong emphasis on Virgo planets this month we will all do well to analyze where we have fallen short and to strategically plan for how to correct our errors and move confidently forward once again.

From August 31 through September 15 Jupiter will sextile Pluto at 17-19 degrees of Scorpio/Capricorn and Saturn will trine Uranus at 2 degrees of Capricorn/Taurus.  Trines are easy energy that facilitate forward movement.  However, that easy energy will come to naught if we don’t combine it with effort.  The message is to analyze, plan and act in the first half of the month while the wind is at your back.

September 6 — Mercury moves into Virgo and Saturn turns direct at 2 degrees Capricorn.  Saturn turning direct is a big deal.  Most of us will feel this in our bones (Saturn rules bones) and in our energy field.  Saturn is a business planet so all work- and career-related endeavors should move more smoothly and confidently.  Saturn’s limitations and restrictions were emphasized when he was in his retrograde phase.  Saturn moving direct lets us take what we have learned this summer and to use that knowledge to attain our goals.  Saturn does reward hard work and sensible application of effort.

September 7-8 — Sun opposes Neptune at 15 degrees of Virgo/Pisces; Mercury trines Saturn and Uranus at 2 Virgo/Capricorn/Taurus; and Venus squares Mars at 28-29 Libra/Capricorn.  The Mercury/Saturn/Uranus grand trine in earth signs provides a beneficial shot of ease to help us move forward in a practical, grounded way.  However, that positive energy is modified by the Sun/Neptune opposition that brings an element of indecision and fuzzy thinking to the equation.  Venus square Mars in Libra/Capricorn furnishes a sense of challenge that can get us moving despite the illusory Neptunian veil.  Be cautious when approaching relationship matters as there is a strong sense of “me versus them.”

September 9 — Venus enters Scorpio on the 9th and is square Mars at 29 degrees Capricorn.  Romantic relationships are deeply scrutinized during this challenging time.  Venus rules feminine energy and Mars rules masculine energy.  There could be an internal battle between your desire for a deep connection with someone and anger and/or frustration over real or imaginary problems with the relationship.

Also, on September 11-12 — Mars enters Aquarius; while

Sun is sextile Jupiter at 18 degrees Virgo/Scorpio;

Sun is trine Pluto at 18 degrees Virgo/Capricorn;

Jupiter is sextile Pluto at 18 degrees Scorpio/Capricorn; and

Venus is opposing Uranus at 2 degrees Scorpio/Taurus.

Mars in Aquarius opens up new avenues of thought and action.  It is time to express your individuality and to re-assess matters relating to freedom (or the lack thereof).  Take time to think of what makes you unique and special.  Mars in Aquarius asks you to come out of hiding regarding the exclusive qualities only you have.  YOU have a gift to give to the world.  Mars in Aquarius will help you find that gift.

It takes courage to search for and acknowledge those gifts (Venus opposing Uranus), but the rewards are enormous — both for yourself and for those who receive your gifts.  Those of you with planets in Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio are especially urged to heed the call of Mars in Aquarius.

Be open to so-called wild thoughts that enter your mind.  Many useful insights are never used or acknowledged because we are not tuned into those “sudden insights.”  Be warned though, you don’t need to act on everything that comes into your mind.  Some restraint and common sense is needed.  Mars in Aquarius is wonderful for those of you who are inventors of any kind.

September 13 – Mercury opposes Neptune at 14 degrees Virgo/Pisces.  Your thinking could be fuzzy, overly idealistic and illogical at this time.  Best to shelve discussion and/or dissection of weighty issues and save them until another day.

September 15-21 – Mars square Uranus at 2 degrees Aquarius/Taurus.

This is more of the crazy energy that we have been dealing with for months.  Hang in there, watch your temper and pay attention when driving.  This too shall pass.  A big positive is that you may get a second wind and/or a burst of energy that allows you to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time.  Marvelous, startling ideas may pop in your head from an unknown well of inspiration.

The edgy Mars/Uranus square is lightened by:  Mercury sextile Jupiter at 19 degrees Virgo/Scorpio; Mercury trine Pluto at 19 degrees Virgo/Capricorn; and Jupiter sextile Pluto at 19 degrees Scorpio/Capricorn.  Communication and classes of all kinds are favored.  Jupiter sextile Pluto is excellent for digging out the truth.

Venus square the lunar nodes at 4 degrees Scorpio/Leo/Aquarius will bring back shades of the energy from the lunar eclipse of July 27, 2018.  If you have unresolved issues from that time period, you may find resolution now.

September 24 – Full Moon at 1 degree Aries/Libra.  At the time of the full Moon, the Moon is conjunct Chiron and the Sun opposes Chiron.  Both of the lights are square Saturn.  This is an excellent time to let go of those things that are causing you hurt.  Saturn will help you sort out reality from wishful thinking so you can fix what is broken and in need of repair.  Conflicts around “me versus you” will be especially on the radar.  The Aries full Moon will be felt the strongest if you have planets or points in the early degrees of the cardinal signs and the late degrees of mutable signs.

September 26 through the year 2021 – Pluto and Uranus form a biseptile aspect.  The biseptile aspect is considered a minor aspect, however it can be very powerful.  It brings in an overlay of fate and even, some would say, contact from other dimensions. Things may happen that are unpredictable; yet such happenings may have a profound effect on your psyche and spirituality.  Astrologer Tom Delay calls this aspect the “forks in the road of destiny.”  It may explain those things that happen over the next three years that have no known reason for happening and other downright “weird” happenings.

Astrology Transits August 2018 – Endings and Beginnings

New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings. — Lao Tzu

As the month opens, many of us are still reeling from the effects of the Mars, Uranus and Pluto contacts and the solar and lunar eclipses of last month.  The chaotic, fiery, upsetting energy of Mars square Uranus continues as August begins.

Those energies came a little too close for comfort for me on July 4, when I had to evacuate from my home due to the fast-moving Lake Christine fire in my Colorado community. Luckily, due to some amazing, courageous firefighters, my home and neighborhood were saved and I am now happily back home.

Mars is retrograde and out of bounds, so the Martian energy is uncommonly strong right now.  Tempers are short, aggression is rampant, fire danger is high and explosions and accidents of all kinds are likely.  In addition, Mercury, the planet of communication, turned retrograde on July 27 at 24 degrees Leo (until August 11) bringing mix-ups, and misunderstandings in communication.

August 6, Sun at 14 degrees Leo square Jupiter at 15 degrees Scorpio.  Sun square Jupiter can bring conflicts due to arrogance and disregard for other’s feelings (either by you or someone else).  However, it can also be a very positive contact.  It can bring advancement in life, recognition and material and spiritual success.  Because Jupiter magnifies and enhances everything it touches, it is critically important to project the positive side of this planetary influence.  You will be most affected if you have planets between 9 and 20 degrees of any of the fixed signs (Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Taurus).

August 7, Uranus turns Retrograde at 2 degrees Taurus.  Uranus will remain in retrograde motion until January 6, 2019.  Uranus retrograde in Taurus can disrupt your love life and/or finances.  However, it can also bring innovative ideas and solutions to such problems.  Because Uranus is the wild-card planet its exact manifestation can never be known for sure.  Use this time to let your imagination and creativity flow and to stay open to new possibilities.  You may be surprised at the breakthroughs that can occur.

August 9, Venus in Libra opposing Chiron in Aries, square Saturn in Capricorn.  Use this energy to realistically assess (Saturn) whether any of your current relationships (Venus) are healing or detrimental (Chiron) to you.

August 11, New Moon Solar Eclipse at 19 degrees Leo.

The Sun and Moon are conjunct retrograde Mercury in Leo and all are square Jupiter in Scorpio, inconjunct Pluto in Capricorn and inconjunct Neptune in Pisces.

The major theme is communication of all kinds such as thinking, lecturing, discussion and debate.  The inconjunct aspect relates to an issue that never seems to be resolved; it just keeps coming back to haunt you.  Because of the hard aspects of the eclipse to Jupiter and Pluto, it can foster disagreements and arguments about ideas (Mercury), beliefs (Jupiter) and power (Pluto).  I would advise you not to engage in political discussions around the time of this eclipse.

As part of Saros Series 2 New North, this eclipse can have far reaching effects on those with significant planets or points from 13 degrees to 23 degrees of Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius or Taurus.  A disturbing, or exciting (depending on your viewpoint), feature of this Saros series is that it can cause a collapse of plans or life-styles and a change of life direction.  However, the rebuilding afterwards can produce a beneficial new life-style that would never have been contemplated without the collapse. The energy of this eclipse is similar to that of the eclipse of July 31, 2000, which occurred at 8 degrees Leo.

August 19, Mercury Turns Direct at 11 Degrees Leo.  Mercury turns direct with a lovely sextile aspect to Venus in Libra. This light-hearted aspect brings thoughts of love and a feeling of balance and graciousness. Use this friendly energy to heal any relationship tiffs that occurred during the preceding stressful weeks. Those of you who are artists, writers or sellers of beauty or beauty products can prosper under this auspicious aspect.  Something may come to light that has been hidden.

August 19, Jupiter at 15 degrees Scorpio trine Neptune in Pisces.  Jupiter trine Neptune is another lovely aspect that brings a feeling of optimism and generosity of spirit.  It is exceptionally beneficial for taking part in a spiritual quest or truth-seeking mission of any kind.  Pay attention to your dreams, visions and meditations for guidance from a higher power.

Because it brings a feeling of compassion and concern for others, taking part in charitable causes would be an excellent way to work with this energy.

August 25, Grand Trine of Sun trine Uranus and Saturn.

August 26, Full Moon at 3 degrees Pisces and Venus Square Pluto.  The full Moon forms a kite aspect pattern with five easy aspects to the Venus/Pluto square.  A kite is formed when planets form a Grand Trine, and two of them sextile a fourth point or point.

This kite configuration emphasizes earth signs, which brings a sense of a stable, secure energy movement.  Use the Full Moon to move toward new personal and professional opportunities that can bring long-term improvements in your life.

August 27, Mars Turns Direct at 28 Degrees Capricorn.  Mars moving direct will mitigate some, but not all, of the excessive frustration and anger that has been so prevalent all summer.

Astrology Transits July 2018 – Eclipse Season of Change

Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead let life live through you.

And do not worry that your life is turning upside down.

How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come? — Rumi

As we enter another “eclipse season” we are once again asked to look at where we need to make changes in our life. Because the solar and lunar eclipses involve the “lights” they have a big impact on our life. The upcoming eclipses are:

Partial Solar Eclipse July 12, 2018, at 20:41 degrees Cancer

Total Lunar Eclipse July 27, 2018, at 4:44 degrees Aquarius/Leo

Partial Solar Eclipse August 11, 2018 at 18:41 degrees Leo

June 29 – Mercury enters Leo until September 5. While transiting Leo, Mercury turns retrograde on July 25.

June 30 – Mercury square Uranus at 1.58 Leo/Taurus. Watch for set opinions and ideas and sudden ideological skirmishes. All matters that involve communication should be handled carefully. Expect the unexpected! With both planets in fixed signs there is a strong undercurrent of stubbornness and fixed opinions to be dealt with. Tread carefully.

July 5-July 8 – Sun trine Jupiter at 13 Cancer/Scorpio. Enjoy this lovely, optimistic trine aspect. Holiday fun and family gatherings should go smoothly. Because Mars opposes Mercury, you do need to be extra careful driving when out and about.

July 8 – Sun trine Neptune at 16 degrees Cancer/Pisces. This time period is like a cool, green oasis in the midst of a hot, chaotic, challenging terrain. It fosters a feeling of compassion, spirituality and harmony when sharing your views of the world with others.  Use this time to meditate, pray and commune with those in your spiritual family.

July 9 – Mercury square Jupiter at 13 degrees Leo/Scorpio. The energy takes a turn on the 9th when communication around your beliefs becomes problematic. Travel could also be problematic, so leave plenty of time for delays and double check your itinerary.

July 10 – Venus enters Virgo. Jupiter turns direct at 13.20 Scorpio. Jupiter resuming direct motion is good for business endeavors of all kinds. If you have had a project that you just couldn’t move forward, Jupiter direct should help move things along.

July 12-13 – Solar Eclipse at 20:41 Cancer opposing Pluto at 19.58 Capricorn. The solar eclipse occurs at a new Moon when the Moon is conjunct the Sun (see the eclipse chart below). Since the Moon relates to our emotional life and the Sun relates to our outer, visible life, this conjunction is about integrating the Moon’s emotional needs with how you live your everyday life.

Sun opposing Pluto at 19-20 degrees Cancer/Capricorn. Because the eclipse opposes Pluto, there is a considerable amount of intense challenge connected to this eclipse. Sun in opposition to Pluto is a challenging energy that unleashes tension and power struggles. Be careful about engaging in such tussles, especially with regard to work or family issues. Because Pluto rules the masses and political machinations, such power struggles can manifest on a global scale.

Venus trine Uranus at 1 to 2 degrees of Virgo/Taurus. The Venus trine Uranus helps to mitigate the Sun opposition Pluto energy, though with Uranus you can always expect the unexpected.

This eclipse will be especially important for those with planets or the angles near 20 degrees of Cancer, Libra, Capricorn and Aries.

July 20-22 – Mars conjunct South Node at 5 degrees Aquarius. Venus sextile Jupiter at 12 degrees of Virgo/Scorpio. Retrograde Mars conjunct the South Node can bring people back into your life and/or reactivate conditions from an earlier time.

July 26 – Mercury turns retrograde at 23:26 Leo.

July 27 – Total Lunar Eclipse at 04:44 Aquarius/Leo. This total lunar eclipse packs a wallop in more ways than one. In a total eclipse, the Sun and Moon are very close in orb to the Nodes, which brings a strong fated quality to the event. In addition, the Moon is conjunct Mars; the Sun is opposing Mars; and Mars is square Uranus. Moon/Sun/Mars/Uranus means that:

  • Everyone will be feeling emotionally over stimulated (Moon).
  • There is a feeling that our ego (Sun/Mars) is being threatened and we may feel a strong need to protect our emotional and physical territory.
  • Probability of erratic, chaotic or unexpected events (Uranus/Mars) is high. Be extra, extra careful on the road (accidents and road rage) or when handling dangerous objects or substances.
  • Explosions, fires and natural disasters are likely (volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. (Mars and Uranus).
  • Stay away from family or relationship disputes and hot spots until after the August 11 eclipse and the end of the eclipse season (end of August).

This eclipse will be felt most strongly by those with planets or angles near 4 degrees Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius or Taurus.

If you keep your wits about you, Mars retrograde in Aquarius is superb for detaching from the craziness all around you so you can objectively reinvent those things or attitudes that need to be tweaked.

On a positive note, Venus in opposition to retrograde Neptune is good for tuning into your spiritual self. Saturn square Chiron helps calm the energy and can offer big healing rewards to those who are able to use the energy of the two eclipses to bring about any much-needed transformation.

Astrology Transits June 2018 – Bridge to Quieter Times

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can.

Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

June opens with a waning Sagittarius Full Moon and the Sun and Mercury in Gemini, which act like a bridge between the earthy, yet explosive, energy of last month and the calmer, more cerebral energy of June. The emphasis is now on the mutable signs (Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini).

June 5-7, Mercury conjunct Sun in Gemini square Neptune at 16 degrees Pisces.

Something unknown may be revealed in more detail or secrets may be exposed. Be extra careful of fraudsters and flim flam schemes as you are more apt to deceive yourself at this time. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Better to use this energy to tune into your creative side or go to see a fantasy movie. If you are a writer or poet your imagination will be at an all-time high. Use this time to jump start your muse.

Due to the Gemini influence, communication in all matters of expression is favored through June 21st. Take this time to express your feelings and ideas and to make note of them for future use. The Gemini new Moon on the 13th is an especially opportune time to use this excellent communicative energy. For those of you who have a book, article or blog post rattling around in your brain, now is the time to brush those ideas off and actually publish them in some way.

June 14, Venus square Uranus at 1 degree Leo/Taurus.

Relationship matters are volatile under this challenging energy. There is an air of unpredictability and stubbornness in the cosmic soup at this time. Better to wait a week before addressing any relationship issues. You may be unsure of what you want in a committed relationship.  One minute you want more freedom and the next minute you want more security.  Snap decisions are discouraged at this time.

June 17, Neptune turns retrograde at 16 (nearly 17) degrees Pisces.

Neptune is retrograde until November 25, 2018. During this lengthy stint in retrograde motion, Neptune only moves three degrees backwards, so not much will change other than the Neptunian energy will become more intense. Retrograde Neptune also favors revisiting your inner imagination and muse for helpful stories, dreams and imagination. Your dreams (both daydreams and night dreams) may become more vivid.

Retrograde Neptune in trine to retrograde Jupiter is a superb time to face your fears and to determine the difference between false hopes and wishes and false fears and anxieties. When Jupiter moves forward on July 10, you will then be in a better position to move confidently forward.

Summer Solstice on June 21

When the Sun enters the family-oriented sign of Cancer,we officially shift into the summer season in the northern hemisphere. Plan a small celebration to be with family and/or those who are like family to you.

June 26, Mars turns Retrograde at 9 degrees Aquarius until the end of August.

When any planet is retrograde, it becomes extra potent and its effects are felt more strongly. The energy of a retrograde planet becomes more intense and matters regarding that planet slow down and are unable to easily be expressed. Retrograde Mars slows the hectic, frazzled pace of last month. Mars retrograde:

  • The emphasis shifts from action to more of a thoughtful mode.
  • This is not the best time to start a dispute or argument or to file a lawsuit. Your bargaining power is less than optimum.
  • Be mindful when starting a new project or when initiating a new action. You may be feeling extra tired or sluggish during Mars’ retrograde motion.
  • You may be more prone to injuries and accidents due to carelessness or inattention. Mars, along with Mercury, rules cars and machinery. Keep your machines tuned and in good shape.
  • This is not the best time for elective surgery. If practical, it would be best to postpone such surgery. Be extra careful with knives, scissors, guns and all other sharp and/or dangerous objects.

Do use this Mars retrograde time to:

  • Make an inventory of your life — where you are, versus where you want to be.
  • Because Mars rules your desires, it is an especially opportune time to reassess your desires versus your reality.

After Mars goes retrograde, five planets will be in retrograde motion, including Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto. This summer is not the best time to initiate new projects or actions. Rather, it is a time to reassess your life, so you can move forward in the fall.

June 27, The Capricorn full Moon conjuncts Saturn and opposes the Cancer Sun at 5 degrees Cancer/Capricorn.

This full Moon can be an emotional sink hole due to the emotional Moon trying to combine its energy with Saturn, the planet of limitation and responsibility.  The opposition to the Sun has the effect of stifling your urge to express yourself to those you are close to.  I can almost hear a collective sign of “why me” during this challenging full Moon.

Any emotional confrontations started at this time, can turn into an out-of-proportion power play when the solar eclipse of July 12 opposes Pluto at 20 degrees Cancer/Capricorn.  Choose your battles.

Next month:  A solar eclipse on July 12 at 20 degrees Cancer and a total lunar eclipse on July 27 at 27 degrees Aquarius/Leo.

My summer mini reading series begins on June 6, 2018. I will be doing readings at the Nu.Topia Tour the Mystery event held at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado on:
