Solar Eclipse March 2016

Solar Eclipse 400x177

The March 9, 2016 solar eclipse at 18 degrees Pisces is the first Supermoon of 2016. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is closest to the Earth during its elliptical orbit.

As illustrated, solar eclipses happen at a new Moon when the Moon and Sun are conjunct, the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth and the Moon is within degrees of a lunar Node. The Moon blocks the Sun’s rays and casts a shadow on Earth.

Eclipses tend to bring major life events such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces, starting school, finishing school, ending a job or starting a new job. Solar eclipses “shake you loose” and move you forward. They often mark a major turning point in your life. Those events can be perceived as either “good” or “bad.” Major events will normally only be felt if an eclipse falls on a natal planet or key point in your chart such as the ascendant, nadir, descendant, midheaven or your Sun/Moon midpoint.

You will feel the March 9 Solar Eclipse most strongly if you have planets at 13 degrees to 22 degrees of the mutable signs (Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius).

To understand this solar eclipse we need to look at the Saros Series it belongs to and the major aspects it makes. This Eclipse belongs to Saros Series 18 South. This family of eclipses is concerned with endings and separations. However, all solar eclipses also have a strong theme of new beginnings. Often you will need to give up something in order to make room for something new.

The last time an eclipse occurred in this Saros family was on February 26, 1998. If you can remember what happened at that time, you might get a general idea of what this eclipse means for you. A simplified solar eclipse chart is shown below:

Solar Eclipse chart

The Sun/Moon and Chiron conjunct in Pisces bring a strong theme of healing and being healed. Look to the houses that contain 18 degrees of Pisces and Virgo to determine how you will receive and project this healing energy.

Sun/Moon Opposing Jupiter. Be on the alert for health issues that could arise from overwork and overly stressful conditions. It is best to practice moderation, self discipline and self control in areas being touched by this eclipse. Remember, you are not superman or superwoman. You can only get so much done in a day or week or month. Pushing yourself too hard can result in health problems brought about by over estimating your stamina and abilities.

Chiron may require you to take another look at old physical and emotional wounds that have not been completely healed. With so much Piscean/Virgo energy it is a very good time to heal such old wounds.

Moon/Sun Square Saturn and Jupiter Square Saturn. You can be your own worst enemy with the Sun/Moon (your core needs) and Neptune in Pisces square Saturn in Sagittarius. Fear, pessimism, lethargy and melancholy (Saturn) can feed on themselves and lead to even more fear and pessimism. If you find yourself glued to the couch and TV, eating potato chips, shirking responsibility and/or giving up on your goals and dreams you know that you have fallen into a negative Saturn mode. Saturn often brings out old father (or authority) issues. Anything you can do to eliminate old feelings of guilt, limitation and self abuse will go a long way toward healing (Chiron) such attitudes and will let the positive side of Saturn shine through.

You may experience wildly fluctuating feelings around optimism, growth and moving forward. One minute you may be ready to confidently move forward and the next you are gripped by fear and limitation. The best plan is to be patient and disciplined, while keeping an overlying sense of optimism. Forgiving yourself and others will help free you up to move forward.

The Sun and Moon sextile Pluto and Jupiter trine Pluto can be of tremendous help in dissipating some of the negativity and lethargy brought on by Neptune and the Jupiter/Saturn square. The powerful Pluto energy will help you move forward and will also help in healing.

If the planets in the eclipse chart were having a conference about this eclipse, it might look like this:

Chiron: I think these earth people have some major healing that needs to be done, especially around emotional (Moon) and spiritual issues (Pisces and Neptune in Pisces.) This is such a good time for healing; I hope they take advantage of the opportunity.

Jupiter: Some of the earth people have become so very materialistic. They work and work and the stress builds. They need to learn how to take things easy. Otherwise, they become burnt out, depressed, and lethargic.

Saturn: Well, you know I expect people to work hard and to take responsibility. Instead of giving into pain and fear they need to just keep going and be patient and self disciplined. Of course, I do reward them, sometimes quite handsomely, if they meet my tests.

Neptune: Sometimes they just want to quit and to have all the trials and tribulations go away. They are confused. A very long nap or a few glasses of wine can feel good, but then the next day they feel worse. Tuning into their spiritual side can have better, more long-lasting benefits.

Pluto:  I have given them a strong and powerful will and great powers of recuperation and transformation. Like the Phoenix they can rise up from their lethargy and disappointment and create something much better than what they had before.

So the consensus of the planets is:

Work hard, but not too hard. Take responsibility, but stay optimistic. Let things go that no longer are working for you. Use your will to transform your life and build from the ashes. Tune into your spiritual side and heal old wounds.

All of the Planets: Let’s go thank the Sun and Moon and the South Node for giving the earthlings this wonderful chance to set things right and to heal old wounds.  We know that a solar eclipse can be very challenging, but it can also bring blessings and benefits.

Taurus Solar Eclipse

If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.  Joseph Campbell

This new moon solar eclipse belongs to Saros Series 16 South, which means that this April 28-29 solar eclipse contains the energy from that very first eclipse in the series that began at the South Pole on September 21, 1953.  In that first eclipse Neptune (compassion) was on the midpoint of the New Moon/Node (new beginnings toward life purpose) and Mars (energy and, unfortunately, sometimes anger) was on the midpoint of Uranus (sudden, life-shaking events) and Neptune (peace, love and a sense of our spirituality but also confusion and delusion).

When we tie the energy of that first Saros Series 16 South eclipse to the energy today, we can see that this second April eclipse has the power to mellow some of the harsh energy in the sky (the Grand Cross of Pluto/Jupiter/Mars and Uranus).  Think of the April 15 lunar eclipse and the Grand Cross as a necessary occurrence to release the pressure.  Even Mother Earth has been experiencing numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in an effort to release built up pressure.  A significant amount of energy was released during the first part of April; and it is likely that an important part of your life may be changed forever.  Though often difficult, change will free you to move toward a more fulfilling path.

The April solar eclipse falls at 8 degrees Taurus bringing a grounding element to the overwhelming energy that we have been feeling.  Neptune, Chiron and Venus form a stellium (a grouping of planets) in Pisces.  It is as though the universe needed to shake us up so that we are willing to tune into our spiritual (Neptune), loving (Venus) side in order to heal (Chiron) ourselves and our planet.

The sign of Taurus is about security and grounding.  It’s also about being true to who you are and expressing your own values through walking your own, unique path.  Each of us has something special that we were meant to do.  (Look to the Sun sign, Moon sign, and the sign and house that contain the North Node to get an indication of what that path is.)

Because solar eclipses are always about a new beginning there is no better time to begin to move toward those things that you are drawn to (Taurus/second house = values).  What do you value and why do you value it?  How can you bring more of that energy into your life at this time?

This is especially important this year due to the traumatic, upsetting energy of the lunar eclipse and the Grand Cross.  Most of us are feeling a little shaken, a little disoriented, and yes, maybe even a little fearful.  It is my belief that the volatile energy that we have experienced is just the universe’s way of shaking us up so that we are willing to listen to our inner voice and intuition (Neptune).  We often make the mistake of thinking that we need to know each step to take to bring about our desired future.  We are unwilling to take the first small step and uneasy about making much needed changes.

This April solar eclipse in Taurus asks us to make a beginning, however small, toward those things that are in line with our true authenticity and values.   As Joseph Campbell stated, our path is usually not clear.  We don’t need to know the full path.  We only need to make a beginning!

Lunar Eclipse in Libra Aries April 2014

“Some changes look negative on the surface but you will soon realize that space is being created in your life for something new to emerge.”   ―Eckhart Tolle

The April 15 lunar eclipse has the Moon in the sign of Libra with an opposition to the Sun in Aries.  As with all lunar eclipses, the Moon is full, which signifies that something has come to fruition.  It’s time to re-evaluate, refocus and to get rid of excess baggage.  Full moons shed light on situations and illuminate them.  It is your job to look at those situations objectively and make conscious choices about what to keep and what to release.   A lunar eclipse sometimes brings a major life restructuring.  Even when major changes are not forthcoming in your life, a lunar eclipse always brings in new people, ideas, events or situations.  A really good way to make use of the lunar eclipse energy is to take a hard look at your life to determine those things that are no longer a positive influence in your life.  Use the energy of the lunar eclipse to help you make the changes that you have wanted to make for a long time.

The first rule is to be true to yourself.  You will always know deep inside what the correct decision is.  The rational mind will sometimes “talk” you out of those feelings.  Remember, the lunar eclipse is all about the Moon.  The Moon is about emotions, feelings and subconscious urges.  It is always a good idea at a lunar eclipse to take some quiet time to go within and to nurture the subconscious. The subconscious is where the energy begins.  The few days before and after a lunar eclipse can often be stressful and chaotic due to the large amount of feelings and emotions that are swirling around you and within you.  Going within or sitting in meditation has the benefit of quieting down the emotional energy of a lunar eclipse.

Let the subconscious “speak” to you.  Where are you feeling bogged down, over burdened, and/or burnt out?  What could you do if you could do anything in the world?  Where would you live?  How would you dress?  Who would your friends be?  How would a day in your life look?  These are all valuable clues for you to use to take advantage of the lunar eclipse energy.  It is much more productive to guide the energy and to let it help you bring about a new and better tomorrow.

Of course, sometimes the eclipse brings unexpected, unwanted and sudden, far-reaching changes into your life.  When this happens it may seem like you do not have a choice.  You may be overwhelmed and it is all you can do to just cope with the upheavals.  This may be especially true of this eclipse as it is happening at the same time that the Cardinal Grand Cross is coming to an exact configuration once again.

The Universe is not only asking you to let go of that which no longer serves your higher self but is practically screaming it.  If you have felt stuck in your life, the lunar eclipse and the subsequent powerful Grand Cross may act as a wild card (think the Tower card in the Tarot deck) to shake things up in your life.  Your carefully built structures could come tumbling down forcing you to pick up the pieces and to build something more conducive to your happiness and spiritual growth.

Look to the houses where the eclipse is falling to see where change is needed.  In this case, it will be the houses that hold the signs of Libra and Aries and, to a lesser extent, the house where Cancer and Capricorn fall. Next look to the houses where you have planets near 25 degrees of Libra, Aries, Cancer or Capricorn.  The general meaning of the houses are:

House

Meaning

First House Your physical appearance and health, how the world sees you and how you want the world to see you
Second House Your possessions and money, the potential to earn money and how you spend your money, your values and what is important to you, and your self esteem.
Third House Daily communications, how you talk and write, your tone of voice, daily and local travel and how you relate to your siblings and neighbors
Fourth House Mother or person(s) who raised you, your childhood and present home, how you keep house, your roots, heritage, ancestry, the end of something
Fifth House Pleasure, children, hobbies and fun, how you express and love and your romantic nature, your creative and artistic ability, a love interest appears or leaves
Sixth House Your work, job and pets, co-workers and working conditions, how you work and the services you provide, doctors, health and  health care providers, landlords and tenants
Seventh House Your marital and business partners and your attitude toward marriage, legal matters, lawsuits and lawyers, and dealings with the public
Eighth House Sex, IRS, joint finances, how you spend or rely on your partner’s money and your partner’s possessions, the support you receive from others, inheritance/gifts from others
Ninth House Higher mind, religion, philosophy and beliefs, foreign travel and life abroad, college, publishing, higher courts, grandchildren, air travel,
Tenth House Your father, your profession or avocation, public reputation and status, your superiors and all authority figures, the kind of boss you are, high honors (or disrepute)
Eleventh House Friends, club organizations, groups of all kinds, your hopes, dreams, goals and wishes, what you want out of life
Twelfth House Inner strengths and weaknesses, confinement, prisons and hospitals, seclusion, how you spend your private time, fears, dreams, meditation, hypnosis and intuition.

Thus, if the eclipse falls in your fourth house, you may have family issues come up; there may be issues around moving or someone moving in or out of your house, rules in the home, and issues with your parents, etc.  There could also be issues related to work/home balance due to the polarity between the fourth and tenth houses.

Finally, because the eclipse falls in the Aries/Libra axis there could be issues around your own needs (Aries) versus the needs of others (Libra), how to get along with others, and balancing the need to weigh your options (Libra) versus making sudden, impulsive choices (Aries).

Enjoy the eclipse as much as possible.  Life was not meant to be boring!

How the US Chart Interacts with the Transiting Planets

The US chart for July 4, 1776, at 5:10 pm, in Philadelphia, PA has the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in Cancer.  Those planets are square natal Saturn and are opposed by transiting Pluto and square transiting Uranus.  This sets up an extremely powerful dynamic.  Some of the manifestations of this energy are listed below.

What Are Possible Negative Manifestations?

Fear may cause physical and/or legal aggression

Overwhelmed people or institutions

Impulsive/reckless behavior or spending

Starting or escalating a war(s) and expansion of military technology

Addictive or obsessive behavior due to wanting to escape

Nuclear (Pluto) accidents (Mars and Uranus)

Gridlock of all kinds (due to the power (Pluto) dynamic)

Violent weather events:  tornado, volcanic eruptions (Pluto/Uranus), fires (Mars), accidents and/or attacks involving oils wells, subways (Mars/Pluto/Neptune)

What are Possible Positive Manifestations?

Unprecedented breakthroughs in science, technology

Thoughtfully and proactively challenging ourselves and others to bring about positive change

Reformation (Pluto) of the justice system (Jupiter)

Willingness to go “out on a limb” for what you believe is right (Jupiter transits)

Having the courage to let go of what is no longer working in order to bring in better conditions (Jupiter transits)

Being willing to actively work with others to bring about change (Mars in Libra)

Breakthroughs in ushering in a new sense of cooperation by active dialogue (Mars in Libra)

Staying balanced through the changes and presenting a calm face to others (Libra)

Mars in Libra could bring exciting love relationships.  Fighting and making up was never so much fun!

Am I Affected by These Transits?

If you have planets or your ascendant in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn you will be affected by these transits.  Those who have planets near 8 to 17 degrees of the above signs will feel the transits the most.   Those with planets or chart angles at 16-24 Scorpio, Taurus, Aquarius or Leo will feel the transit of Saturn.  The interaction of the transiting planets with your chart may be different depending on the planets involved.  In all cases, we can expect the unexpected.

Look at where the planets are that rule the above signs.  That is:

Aries               Look at where Mars is in your chart.

Cancer             Look at where the Moon is in your chart.

Libra               Look at where Venus is in your chart

Capricorn        Look at where Saturn is in your chart

Scorpio           Look at where Mars and Pluto are in our chart

Taurus             Look at where Venus is in your chart

Aquarius         Look at where Uranus is in your chart

Leo                  Look at where the Sun is in your chart

Also look at the house where the transiting planet falls.  The houses that the transiting planets go through will also be affected.

The general meaning of the houses is:

1st Personal:

How others see you and the initial impression you make on others.  Your mask to the world.  Major first house transits can change your appearance.  The first house can show health issues.
2nd Money:

Money! Your stuff – what you hold dear, whether it is possessions, ideas or ideologies.  What are our priorities?  What do you identify with?
3rd Learning:

What is familiar to you:  your neighborhood, the things you do on autopilot, your early childhood education, how you learn new things, and your siblings.  It is the house of communication.
4th Family: Your emotional storehouse and foundation: home, family, country.  We retreat to the 4th house when things become overwhelming.  It is the most private part of your chart.  What feels safe?  It will point to your most nurturing parent (at one time this was the mother only).
5th Love: It is the creative, playful, you that wants to be noticed.  Your love affairs and the things you enjoy show up here.  Your luck or lack thereof will show up here.
6th Work:

It rules your children, lovers and pets that you treat like children.

What do you do with your time? That is work, charity work, socializing, etc.  The need to have a “function’ in life.  Your health will show up in the sixth house.

7th

Relationship:

Also called the Descendant.  The part of you that relates to one other person:  your   spouse, significant other and best friend.  Committed relationships of any kind whether business or personal and open enemies (lawsuits).
8th Crisis:

The deep, heavy, intense parts of our life, including crisis of all kinds:  death, taxes, insurance, inheritances and sexuality.  Your committed partner. How you rejuvenate yourself after hard times. Outcome of lawsuits.
9th Mind:

Travel, higher education, religion, spirituality, metaphysics, philosophy, publishing and anything that opens your mind.
10th Career:

The part of you that reacts to authority figures.  You being in charge.  Your public self and your career.
11th Friends:

Friends, groups and peers.  The part of you that joins with others for fun or to achieve a common goal.  Hopes and wishes.
12th Secrets:

The secret place in your chart where only you can go.  It rules churches, convents, prisons, and hospitals.  The part of you that needs solitude.

Therefore, when any of the planets in this T-Square, Grand-Square or eclipse falls in any of the houses above, it will affect the matters relating to that house.

The Grand Cross will be in effect until May 1, overlapping the Solar Eclipse at 8º Taurus on April 29. The Solar Eclipse will sextile Neptune, which urges us to tune into our mystical, inner selves for guidance to bring in the much-needed, new energy.
