When Do Eclipses Occur

Solar eclipses occur at the New Moon when the Sun and Moon are conjunct and within 18 degrees of the nodal axis. The nodal axis is the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun as it moves around the earth)**.

Ancient Babylonians around 747 B.C. discovered that solar eclipses occur in eclipse families and that eclipses could be accurately predicted. We now call these families the Saros Series (SS). Each SS starts at either the North Pole or the South Pole and runs for hundreds of years–up to 1,260 years. An eclipse in a SS is labeled as being either North or South denoting at which pole it started. Each SS produces an eclipse every 18 years plus 9 to 11 days (depending on how many leap years occurred during the 18 years).

The recent solar eclipse that occurred on March 8, 2016 at 18 degrees Pisces belongs to SS 18 South. This solar eclipse started at the South Pole on August 20, 1096 and will end on September 22, 2340 at the North Pole.

Each solar eclipse begins as a partial eclipse. At each occurrence of an eclipse in a SS, the eclipse occurs closer to the nodal axis. Finally, after approximately 650 years the eclipse is conjunct the nodal axis and a total eclipse occurs. After that, each eclipse in the SS begins to move away from the nodal axis until, once again, only partial eclipses occur.

A SS ends when only a very small eclipse occurs at 18 degrees or more from the nodal axis at the opposite pole from where the first eclipse occurred. When one SS ends, another takes its place. There are many SS operating at any one time.

The table in the following link shows the Saros Series of each eclipse, the zodiac position and the date, time and duration of both solar eclipses and lunar eclipses.

Eclipses 2016 through 2050

This is a rather complex subject, so please leave a comment if you have questions.

**The Sun does not move around the earth, it only appears to do so.  The horoscope wheel is a flattened representation of the ecliiptic.

Who Will the March 2016 Solar Eclipse Affect

The March 8/9 2016 solar eclipse occurs at 18 degrees Pisces.  It will have the most effect on those who have planets near 18 degrees (13 degrees to 23 degrees) of any of the mutable signs.  It will be:
  • conjunct those with planets near 18 degrees of Pisces,
  • opposing planets near 18 degrees of Virgo, and
  • square to planets near 18 degrees in Gemini and Sagittarius.

The eclipse will have the greatest effect on those who have planets conjunct the eclipse.  You are compelled to pay attention to the matters indicated by the planet(s) conjunct the eclipse. in the area of life denoted by the house in which the eclipse occurs.

If the eclipse is square your planet(s) a challenge has been issued.  You will need to take action to resolve the highlighted conflicts.

When the eclipse is in opposition to your planet(s) someone or something is standing in your way.  You will need to find a way to work around or with the opposition to resolve the conflict.

The are of your life the eclipse will affect if it falls in your:

First House – It affects your outer appearance, how you let others perceive you and other’s perception of you.

Second House – Your values, your money, how you spend and earn your money.

Third House – Your communication, school, teaching, learning, your immediate neighborhood.

Fourth House – Your family, your home, your ancestors, your spiritual and family foundations.

Fifth House – Your love affairs, your children, your creative activities and the expression of your individuality.

Sixth House – Your job, your job surroundings, volunteer work, the daily grind, health and healing and your pets.

Seventh House – Your relationships, marriage and business partners, and legal matters.

Eighth House – Taxes, insurance, crisis, inheritances and money received by means other than a job.

Ninth House – College, metaphysics, religion, travel, and any other higher mind activities.

Tenth House – Career, public standing, your employer, honors or disgrace and profession.

Eleventh House – Hopes and wishes, friends, followers and groups such as societies, clubs and organizations.

Twelfth House – Bad habits, your secrets and secret activities, introspection, and transforming old belief systems.

Solar Eclipse March 2016

Solar Eclipse 400x177

The March 9, 2016 solar eclipse at 18 degrees Pisces is the first Supermoon of 2016. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is closest to the Earth during its elliptical orbit.

As illustrated, solar eclipses happen at a new Moon when the Moon and Sun are conjunct, the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth and the Moon is within degrees of a lunar Node. The Moon blocks the Sun’s rays and casts a shadow on Earth.

Eclipses tend to bring major life events such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces, starting school, finishing school, ending a job or starting a new job. Solar eclipses “shake you loose” and move you forward. They often mark a major turning point in your life. Those events can be perceived as either “good” or “bad.” Major events will normally only be felt if an eclipse falls on a natal planet or key point in your chart such as the ascendant, nadir, descendant, midheaven or your Sun/Moon midpoint.

You will feel the March 9 Solar Eclipse most strongly if you have planets at 13 degrees to 22 degrees of the mutable signs (Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius).

To understand this solar eclipse we need to look at the Saros Series it belongs to and the major aspects it makes. This Eclipse belongs to Saros Series 18 South. This family of eclipses is concerned with endings and separations. However, all solar eclipses also have a strong theme of new beginnings. Often you will need to give up something in order to make room for something new.

The last time an eclipse occurred in this Saros family was on February 26, 1998. If you can remember what happened at that time, you might get a general idea of what this eclipse means for you. A simplified solar eclipse chart is shown below:

Solar Eclipse chart

The Sun/Moon and Chiron conjunct in Pisces bring a strong theme of healing and being healed. Look to the houses that contain 18 degrees of Pisces and Virgo to determine how you will receive and project this healing energy.

Sun/Moon Opposing Jupiter. Be on the alert for health issues that could arise from overwork and overly stressful conditions. It is best to practice moderation, self discipline and self control in areas being touched by this eclipse. Remember, you are not superman or superwoman. You can only get so much done in a day or week or month. Pushing yourself too hard can result in health problems brought about by over estimating your stamina and abilities.

Chiron may require you to take another look at old physical and emotional wounds that have not been completely healed. With so much Piscean/Virgo energy it is a very good time to heal such old wounds.

Moon/Sun Square Saturn and Jupiter Square Saturn. You can be your own worst enemy with the Sun/Moon (your core needs) and Neptune in Pisces square Saturn in Sagittarius. Fear, pessimism, lethargy and melancholy (Saturn) can feed on themselves and lead to even more fear and pessimism. If you find yourself glued to the couch and TV, eating potato chips, shirking responsibility and/or giving up on your goals and dreams you know that you have fallen into a negative Saturn mode. Saturn often brings out old father (or authority) issues. Anything you can do to eliminate old feelings of guilt, limitation and self abuse will go a long way toward healing (Chiron) such attitudes and will let the positive side of Saturn shine through.

You may experience wildly fluctuating feelings around optimism, growth and moving forward. One minute you may be ready to confidently move forward and the next you are gripped by fear and limitation. The best plan is to be patient and disciplined, while keeping an overlying sense of optimism. Forgiving yourself and others will help free you up to move forward.

The Sun and Moon sextile Pluto and Jupiter trine Pluto can be of tremendous help in dissipating some of the negativity and lethargy brought on by Neptune and the Jupiter/Saturn square. The powerful Pluto energy will help you move forward and will also help in healing.

If the planets in the eclipse chart were having a conference about this eclipse, it might look like this:

Chiron: I think these earth people have some major healing that needs to be done, especially around emotional (Moon) and spiritual issues (Pisces and Neptune in Pisces.) This is such a good time for healing; I hope they take advantage of the opportunity.

Jupiter: Some of the earth people have become so very materialistic. They work and work and the stress builds. They need to learn how to take things easy. Otherwise, they become burnt out, depressed, and lethargic.

Saturn: Well, you know I expect people to work hard and to take responsibility. Instead of giving into pain and fear they need to just keep going and be patient and self disciplined. Of course, I do reward them, sometimes quite handsomely, if they meet my tests.

Neptune: Sometimes they just want to quit and to have all the trials and tribulations go away. They are confused. A very long nap or a few glasses of wine can feel good, but then the next day they feel worse. Tuning into their spiritual side can have better, more long-lasting benefits.

Pluto:  I have given them a strong and powerful will and great powers of recuperation and transformation. Like the Phoenix they can rise up from their lethargy and disappointment and create something much better than what they had before.

So the consensus of the planets is:

Work hard, but not too hard. Take responsibility, but stay optimistic. Let things go that no longer are working for you. Use your will to transform your life and build from the ashes. Tune into your spiritual side and heal old wounds.

All of the Planets: Let’s go thank the Sun and Moon and the South Node for giving the earthlings this wonderful chance to set things right and to heal old wounds.  We know that a solar eclipse can be very challenging, but it can also bring blessings and benefits.

Taurus Solar Eclipse

If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.  Joseph Campbell

This new moon solar eclipse belongs to Saros Series 16 South, which means that this April 28-29 solar eclipse contains the energy from that very first eclipse in the series that began at the South Pole on September 21, 1953.  In that first eclipse Neptune (compassion) was on the midpoint of the New Moon/Node (new beginnings toward life purpose) and Mars (energy and, unfortunately, sometimes anger) was on the midpoint of Uranus (sudden, life-shaking events) and Neptune (peace, love and a sense of our spirituality but also confusion and delusion).

When we tie the energy of that first Saros Series 16 South eclipse to the energy today, we can see that this second April eclipse has the power to mellow some of the harsh energy in the sky (the Grand Cross of Pluto/Jupiter/Mars and Uranus).  Think of the April 15 lunar eclipse and the Grand Cross as a necessary occurrence to release the pressure.  Even Mother Earth has been experiencing numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in an effort to release built up pressure.  A significant amount of energy was released during the first part of April; and it is likely that an important part of your life may be changed forever.  Though often difficult, change will free you to move toward a more fulfilling path.

The April solar eclipse falls at 8 degrees Taurus bringing a grounding element to the overwhelming energy that we have been feeling.  Neptune, Chiron and Venus form a stellium (a grouping of planets) in Pisces.  It is as though the universe needed to shake us up so that we are willing to tune into our spiritual (Neptune), loving (Venus) side in order to heal (Chiron) ourselves and our planet.

The sign of Taurus is about security and grounding.  It’s also about being true to who you are and expressing your own values through walking your own, unique path.  Each of us has something special that we were meant to do.  (Look to the Sun sign, Moon sign, and the sign and house that contain the North Node to get an indication of what that path is.)

Because solar eclipses are always about a new beginning there is no better time to begin to move toward those things that you are drawn to (Taurus/second house = values).  What do you value and why do you value it?  How can you bring more of that energy into your life at this time?

This is especially important this year due to the traumatic, upsetting energy of the lunar eclipse and the Grand Cross.  Most of us are feeling a little shaken, a little disoriented, and yes, maybe even a little fearful.  It is my belief that the volatile energy that we have experienced is just the universe’s way of shaking us up so that we are willing to listen to our inner voice and intuition (Neptune).  We often make the mistake of thinking that we need to know each step to take to bring about our desired future.  We are unwilling to take the first small step and uneasy about making much needed changes.

This April solar eclipse in Taurus asks us to make a beginning, however small, toward those things that are in line with our true authenticity and values.   As Joseph Campbell stated, our path is usually not clear.  We don’t need to know the full path.  We only need to make a beginning!
