Astrology Transits July 2018 – Eclipse Season of Change

Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead let life live through you.

And do not worry that your life is turning upside down.

How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come? — Rumi

As we enter another “eclipse season” we are once again asked to look at where we need to make changes in our life. Because the solar and lunar eclipses involve the “lights” they have a big impact on our life. The upcoming eclipses are:

Partial Solar Eclipse July 12, 2018, at 20:41 degrees Cancer

Total Lunar Eclipse July 27, 2018, at 4:44 degrees Aquarius/Leo

Partial Solar Eclipse August 11, 2018 at 18:41 degrees Leo

June 29 – Mercury enters Leo until September 5. While transiting Leo, Mercury turns retrograde on July 25.

June 30 – Mercury square Uranus at 1.58 Leo/Taurus. Watch for set opinions and ideas and sudden ideological skirmishes. All matters that involve communication should be handled carefully. Expect the unexpected! With both planets in fixed signs there is a strong undercurrent of stubbornness and fixed opinions to be dealt with. Tread carefully.

July 5-July 8 – Sun trine Jupiter at 13 Cancer/Scorpio. Enjoy this lovely, optimistic trine aspect. Holiday fun and family gatherings should go smoothly. Because Mars opposes Mercury, you do need to be extra careful driving when out and about.

July 8 – Sun trine Neptune at 16 degrees Cancer/Pisces. This time period is like a cool, green oasis in the midst of a hot, chaotic, challenging terrain. It fosters a feeling of compassion, spirituality and harmony when sharing your views of the world with others.  Use this time to meditate, pray and commune with those in your spiritual family.

July 9 – Mercury square Jupiter at 13 degrees Leo/Scorpio. The energy takes a turn on the 9th when communication around your beliefs becomes problematic. Travel could also be problematic, so leave plenty of time for delays and double check your itinerary.

July 10 – Venus enters Virgo. Jupiter turns direct at 13.20 Scorpio. Jupiter resuming direct motion is good for business endeavors of all kinds. If you have had a project that you just couldn’t move forward, Jupiter direct should help move things along.

July 12-13 – Solar Eclipse at 20:41 Cancer opposing Pluto at 19.58 Capricorn. The solar eclipse occurs at a new Moon when the Moon is conjunct the Sun (see the eclipse chart below). Since the Moon relates to our emotional life and the Sun relates to our outer, visible life, this conjunction is about integrating the Moon’s emotional needs with how you live your everyday life.

Sun opposing Pluto at 19-20 degrees Cancer/Capricorn. Because the eclipse opposes Pluto, there is a considerable amount of intense challenge connected to this eclipse. Sun in opposition to Pluto is a challenging energy that unleashes tension and power struggles. Be careful about engaging in such tussles, especially with regard to work or family issues. Because Pluto rules the masses and political machinations, such power struggles can manifest on a global scale.

Venus trine Uranus at 1 to 2 degrees of Virgo/Taurus. The Venus trine Uranus helps to mitigate the Sun opposition Pluto energy, though with Uranus you can always expect the unexpected.

This eclipse will be especially important for those with planets or the angles near 20 degrees of Cancer, Libra, Capricorn and Aries.

July 20-22 – Mars conjunct South Node at 5 degrees Aquarius. Venus sextile Jupiter at 12 degrees of Virgo/Scorpio. Retrograde Mars conjunct the South Node can bring people back into your life and/or reactivate conditions from an earlier time.

July 26 – Mercury turns retrograde at 23:26 Leo.

July 27 – Total Lunar Eclipse at 04:44 Aquarius/Leo. This total lunar eclipse packs a wallop in more ways than one. In a total eclipse, the Sun and Moon are very close in orb to the Nodes, which brings a strong fated quality to the event. In addition, the Moon is conjunct Mars; the Sun is opposing Mars; and Mars is square Uranus. Moon/Sun/Mars/Uranus means that:

  • Everyone will be feeling emotionally over stimulated (Moon).
  • There is a feeling that our ego (Sun/Mars) is being threatened and we may feel a strong need to protect our emotional and physical territory.
  • Probability of erratic, chaotic or unexpected events (Uranus/Mars) is high. Be extra, extra careful on the road (accidents and road rage) or when handling dangerous objects or substances.
  • Explosions, fires and natural disasters are likely (volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. (Mars and Uranus).
  • Stay away from family or relationship disputes and hot spots until after the August 11 eclipse and the end of the eclipse season (end of August).

This eclipse will be felt most strongly by those with planets or angles near 4 degrees Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius or Taurus.

If you keep your wits about you, Mars retrograde in Aquarius is superb for detaching from the craziness all around you so you can objectively reinvent those things or attitudes that need to be tweaked.

On a positive note, Venus in opposition to retrograde Neptune is good for tuning into your spiritual self. Saturn square Chiron helps calm the energy and can offer big healing rewards to those who are able to use the energy of the two eclipses to bring about any much-needed transformation.

Solar Eclipse in Aquarius – Breaking Out

When she transformed into a butterfly,
the caterpillars spoke not of her beauty,
but of her weirdness.
They wanted her to change back into what she always had been.
But she had wings.
Dean Jackson, The Poetry of Oneness

This partial solar eclipse at 27 degrees Aquarius is like a brilliant opening in the universe.  The February 15 solar eclipse is part of the Saros Series 1 South that started on August 24, 1729.  This family of eclipses has the nature of the New Moon with Mercury, Mars and Jupiter.  The eclipse family brings this ancient energy into the present day.  If this eclipse falls prominently in your birth chart, it will bring you new ideas (Mercury), optimism (Jupiter) and the urge to take action (Mars).  Keep these energies in mind as we look at the current eclipse chart.

The chart for this solar eclipse shows:

Sun and Moon conjunct at 27 degrees Aquarius.

Mercury conjunct the eclipse at 25 degrees Aquarius.

Uranus at 25 degrees of Aries in sextile to Mercury and the eclipse.

Pluto in Capricorn sextile Jupiter at 22 degrees of Scorpio.

Part of Fortune 11 degrees Leo (same degree as January 31, 2018 eclipse).

Mars at 12 degrees Sagittarius square Neptune at 13 degrees Pisces.

Do you see how this Aquarius solar eclipse has some of the same energy as the very first eclipse in this Saros series with a little extra added?

Putting all this together, this eclipse is a message from the universe to breakout, breakthrough, awaken, and to express originality, innovation and independence.  It is the cosmos signal to you that it is time to break out of your cocoon despite what the naysayers might believe.  Altogether, this is fantastic energy for breaking out of a rut and moving boldly toward your hopes and wishes.

The downside is that this energy can upset your natural rhythms leading to hyperactivity and insomnia.  Also, be aware that because Uranus is sextile Mercury and the Sun/Moon, expect the unexpected.  Startling events and news of such events can happen out of the blue.  Possible water news such as flooding and tsunami warnings (Neptune) could be in the news.  Follow up events that happened around June 21, 2017, could be revived at this time.

The best way to handle this intense, yet exciting, energy is to:

  • Pay attention to and listen to sudden insights that appear to you out of the blue.
  • Realize that startling news can surface at any time.
  • Stay loose and go with the flow.
  • Always keep your goals in mind.
  • Let go of what is no longer serving you. Be ready for new opportunities.

Due to Uranus, this eclipse can be volatile.  Uranus is a wild-card planet that cannot be predicted.  But it can also bring surprising insights and opportunities.  Solar eclipses are about letting go of what is no longer serving you.  Clearing your life of unnecessary and unhelpful influences will allow you to take of advantage of any new opportunities that come your way.

Eclipse in Leo January 31, 2018

Don’t be afraid of shadows that hide the light.  They can only eclipse it for such a short time. — RoxanaJones.com

The first eclipse of 2018 is a blue Moon that is also a super moon and a total lunar eclipse. This is a phenomena that last occurred 150 years ago.
This full moon lunar eclipse is at 12 degrees Leo in opposition to the Sun at 12 degrees Aquarius.  The energy of this eclipse is focused on individuation (Leo) versus pleasing and acquiescing to the group (Aquarius).  Remember, the group can be one or two others or a city, state, country or world.Like the Full Moon that we experienced earlier this month, this full moon eclipse is opposite Venus.

  • The Moon represents our needs, our emotions and our survival instincts.
  • Venus represents our love nature, how we give and receive love and our money and resources.

The Moon and Venus in opposition set up a tug of war between our needs and the needs of others that we are in relationship with.

The Leo Moon also has to do with how we express ourselves, how we allow our creative urge and how we let ourselves play (or not).

Because the eclipse is quincunx Neptune (150 degrees apart) you could feel a temporary loss of self and/or a deep well of emotion that doesn’t make rational sense.  The best bet is to let the feelings come without judgment.  We are being cleansed and awakened because we all have a lot of important work to do in 2018.  Humanity needs us, the planet needs us and the clearer and more focused we are the more we can help.

Because the Moon rules the sign of Cancer, all full Moons speak to women, mothering, emotions and home.

The 2018 women’s march is scheduled for January 20, 2018, ten days before this eclipse.  Because there is a heightened awareness of women’s issues, this total lunar eclipse could bring even more stories in the news about women’s issues, sexual harassment issues and a debate on women’s place in the home, the workplace and politics.

In addition, the moon in this total lunar eclipse is conjunct Ceres the dwarf planet that rules fertility, the uterus and the stomach. Negatively, she is associated with feelings of abandonment or unworthiness.  The symbol for Ceres is shown in the chart below right next to the Moon.  It looks like a backwards question mark with a line drawn the base.

Moon conjunct Ceres triggers issues around women’s sexuality and reproduction rights.  This harbinger of the 2018 energy is setting the stage for more discussion around those issues.

Watch for debates around single parenthood, transgender and gay parenthood.  This eclipse will usher in a time of heated debate all through 2018 around who has control of our bodies, our children and our sexuality.

This eclipse will be felt the most by those who have personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars at approximately 7 to 17 degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius).

Look to the houses in your chart where:

  • the lunar eclipse falls (Moon in Leo),
  • the house that is opposite the Moon (Sun in Aquarius),
  • the squares to the eclipse (Taurus and Scorpio),

to understand in what area of life this eclipse will affect you.  The following chart shows the eclipse for New York City, NY.

The next eclipse is a partial solar eclipse on February 15, 2018 in the sign of Aquarius.

Astrology Transits August 2017

“When we look up, it widens our horizons. we see what a little speck we are in the universe, so insignificant, and we all take ourselves so seriously, but in the sky, there are no boundaries. No differences of caste or religion or race.” ― Julia Gregson, East of the Sun

Lunar Eclipse

Two eclipses and the change into retrograde motion of both Mercury and Uranus highlight a month of awe-inspiring heavenly movement.

Uranus stationed retrograde on August 2 at 28 degrees Aries and finishes its retrograde on January 2, 2018 at 24 degrees Aries.  Planetary effects become stronger during their retrograde period because the energy is more concentrated.  It is significant that Uranus begins its retrograde exactly trine to the solar eclipse in Leo on August 21 at 28 degrees Leo.

Look for upsets of all kinds, whether perceived as “good” or “bad.”  Insights and creative ideas are overflowing and abundant.  In a word, “expect the unexpected!”

Jupiter in Libra forms an exact square with Pluto in Capricorn on August 4.  Though the square is exact on August 4th and is extra strong, this aspect will be with us until 2020.  It will be felt more at some times than others.  Both Jupiter and Pluto are big players in reshaping our reality.

When the planet of optimism (Jupiter) forms a challenging aspect to the planet of transformation (Pluto) there is a uptick in our motivations and ambitions, along with a greater chance of running into resistance from others.  You might find that people are in your face much more than usual. This square provides an excellent time to repair, refurbish and rebuild all kinds of things.

Pluto gives you the ability to stand up for what you believe is right, but can also make you too set in your ways when it comes to your beliefs.  Because of this, legal conflicts (Jupiter) can explode and/or escalate.  Think before you act.  Watch for new and expanding social consciousness platforms to manifest during this aspect.  Jupiter likes to see the bright side, while Pluto wants to show the dark underbelly.  It should be interesting!

The Lunar eclipse at 15 degrees Aquarius on August 7 begins the show.  In general, the Moon in Aquarius is a time to allow startling insights and inventive thoughts to enter your mind without censure.  It is a time to lighten the load mentally, physically and spiritually.  Fiery, action-oriented Mars is conjunct the Sun and in opposition to the Moon on the eclipse date.

Mercury retrograde begins on August 12 at 11 degrees Virgo.  It completes its retrograde motion on September 5 when it will station direct at 28 degrees Leo.  Mercury turns direct right on the solar eclipse degree addling a fated, karmic quality that makes this Mercury retrograde uncommonly important.  Your efforts to redo, rework, repair, heal and to let go of outworn/outgrown ideas, objects and people are especially significant during the month of August.

US total solar eclipse on August 21 at 28 degrees Leo.

Use the time between the lunar and solar eclipse to tune into your higher self to take advantage of this special time when the mystic veils are parted. You may find that you are able to contact divine guidance as never before.

The planetary picture for this eclipse is:
  • Sun and Moon conjunct
  • Sun and Moon trine Uranus
  • Sun and Moon conjunct Regulus, the fixed Star of Royalty
  • Ascendant trine the Part of Fortune
  • Mars Sextile Jupiter and Trine Uranus
  • Jupiter trine Saturn
  • Jupiter square Pluto

Some possible influences are:

  • High creativity
  • Important insights
  • Being given leadership roles
  • Being removed from leadership roles
  • High accomplishment, but with opposition from others
  • Unexpected events both “good” and “bad”
  • Forward movement around business, beginning to manifest after September 15.

Events that happened around May 9 and the end of May 2017 may have foreshadowed the events of this solar eclipse. Something that was put in place around that time could manifest around the time of the eclipse though the energy often does not completely manifest until later.

Eclipses act as wild cards so there is always an element of the unknown. The eclipse effect will vary considerably depending on your own birth chart. It will primarily affect those with the Sun, Moon or planets in the signs of Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Taurus. Those with planets or angles in the late degrees of Leo/Aquarius will be affected most strongly.

Saturn turns direct on August 26 trine the North Node. I can almost hear the collective sigh of relief. Saturn retrograde has delayed key projects from moving forward and has brought a feeling of tiredness and even depression.

With the eclipses ushering in a new dynamic and the great task master (Saturn) turning direct, I expect the energy to noticeably change by September 15.
